Paying It Forward

This is the latest episode of Real Chicks Rock!™ Presents Real Discussions, featuring DeVonn Baker, a man whose journey from a small town in Florida to the bustling city of Boston is nothing short of inspiring. Devon’s story is a testament to the power of education, mentorship, and the importance of paying it forward.

DeVonn hails from Eatonville, Florida, a town rich in African American history and the birthplace of renowned author Zora Neale Hurston. With a family deeply rooted in education—his grandmother started the first school for African Americans in her community, and his mother held degrees in library science and mortuary science—DeVonn was destined for academic excellence. His journey took him to Morehouse College, an institution known for producing influential African American leaders.

At Morehouse, DeVonn majored in Banking and Finance, influenced by peers and the legacy of Morehouse men who had made significant contributions to their communities. His experiences at Morehouse, including being part of the renowned Morehouse College Glee Club, shaped his outlook on life and cemented his commitment to giving back.

But DeVonn’s story doesn’t end with personal success. He is deeply committed to helping young black men achieve their potential. As the president of the Greater Boston Morehouse College Alumni Association, DeVonn has been instrumental in creating opportunities for scholarships, internships, and mentorship programs. His initiative, House on the Vineyard, combines vacationing with a purpose, raising funds for scholarships and fostering a sense of community among HBCU alumni and supporters.

DeVonn’s journey is a beacon of hope and inspiration, showing us that with determination, support, and a commitment to paying it forward, we can create lasting change.

Special Thanks to my guest, DeVonn Baker.
